I ran across something on slashdot that struck pretty high on the irony meter. The MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America), has got some more egg on it’s face. Not only that, but there’s some “’splainin to do Lucy.”

I followed the story to a post on TorrentFreak to get the details….

The MPAA has, along with the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), been doing all sorts of things both legal and not so legal in their mad quest to protect their profit margins.

They’ve brought lawsuits against all sorts of people for the most rediculous of alleged violations, they’ve harrased and threatened eveyone from young children to little old ladies in one lawsuit or another.

In this latest chapter, they get to wear the label “Hypocrite”. Seems that the author of a blog software package called “Forest Blog” discovered that the MPAA was actually using it. There wouldn’t have been any problem with this except for the fact that they had removed all of the links back to his site. In direct violation of his software license (which required those links not be removed) and did not even credit him as the author of the software.

It’s obvious that the MPAA consider themselves to be special in some way. They, along with the RIAA, will rant and rave about copyright to the point when even some of the people who actually own the copyrights think they’ve gone too far, yet they have no objection to violating a software licence.

This license was a simple one too. He called it ‘Linkware’, which means it was free as long as it contained links back to his website. If the links were removed there would be a fee to license the program.

Can you say “double standard”?

I knew you could.
