I’m sure most have heard of the monstrous deal Google is proposing to buy DoubleClick for 3.1 Billion dollars.. Well, the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) has filed a suit to stop the purchace, alleging that because Google and DoubleClick are in the business of collecting exhaustive personal information on consumers using the Internet and that the privacy of this data is not protected well enough.
Think about it, google already knows the all the details of what you search and what results get clicked on, combine that with DoubleClick’s treasure trove of data they aquire in their normal business of tracking people’s web surfing habits and you’ve got a serious potential threat to privacy. Essentially, there will be very little that google won’t be able to know about you and your habits.
Security minded users who take steps to restrict cookies and clean them out on a regular basis don’t have quite so much to worry about, but the Joe Sixpack’s of the world are another matter. These are the folks that don’t have the least understanding of computer security and in most cases don’t want to know. Before they know it, their lives will be an open book… or worse.
