Vendors Can Spy Act
Welcome back!
Saw something on slashdot about the new so-called "spyware act". Turns out that the thing is probably going to be more useless than the infamous "can spam act". It's got penalties and so on making it illegal for Joe Sixpack to distribute and use spyware, but it's also got exceptions built into it to make it perfectly ok for software vendors, the goons at the RIAA/MPAA and suchlike to do all sorts of things.
Had this been in effect when the sony rootkit was discovered, they would have been legally protected by this asinine legislation instead of liable for all manner of expense when somebody found it and told the world about it.
