Once again Micro$oft is making deals with Linux distributors. This time Linspire will be getting the ability to use M$ instant messaging and digital media. (something tells me that the digital media part is going to include all their nasty rights-chaining DRM as well)
Microsoft Signs Another Linux Deal
SEATTLE (AP) - Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) (MSFT) announced Wednesday that it will license instant messaging and digital media technology to a small desktop Linux distributor, Linspire Inc., adding to a growing number of deals meant to help the Windows operating system work more smoothly with open-source software.
An important part of this article is at the end (and therefore won’t be read by very many people thanks to the “short attention span disease” plaguing the world these days.)
The patent protections Microsoft included in these deals sparked outcry from some in the open-source world. Free software advocates say that under open-source licenses, the code Microsoft shares with some open-source partners should become freely available to all.
