Well, If your name is Joey Nicotera they certainly can. This guy’s gone way out beyond anything I’ve ever heard of when it comes to using LEDs.

LEDs Move Into Home Lighting Market

EVERETT, Mass. (AP) - Joey Nicotera’s fascination with multicolored light bulbs bordered on obsession when he was a teenager. He framed posters in lights and decorated his own Christmas tree. When he couldn’t find a color bulb he wanted, he got paint cans from the basement and made some himself, bathing his second-story bedroom in an eerie glow.

“I’d be driving home from work at night, and I could see his room from five blocks away, with all the weird colors and flashing lights,” recalls his father, Joe Nicotera Sr.

These little semiconductor lights don’t use much power and although they don’t produce a heck of a lot of light per unit, arrays of them can add up to something you’ll see for blocks away.

It’s an interesting idea. He used arrays of 45 to 75 LEDs to produce quite a bit of light and 50 halogen fixtures for overhead light.

He says that his 54 LED fixtures are using less power than a single 100 watt incadesent bulb.

The interesting thing is that these things can be made to produce any color of light without using filters. This means that they can be made to put on some seriously cool light shows with the right controls and some time on the computer programming it all.
