Replace Device or Replace Battery?

I just read something in “Circuits” where a reader asked if they would be better off to replace a battery or just get a new device and honestly that bugs me more than just a little.
I realize that a lot of money has gone into R&D to produce the more powerful, longer lasting batteries in use now. But honestly, I think that when it gets cheaper to replace the device than it would be to change the battery, something is wrong.
And really, this isn’t a new problem. I first ran into it back in the late 1980’s when I discovered that it would cost more (about $3.50 or so I think) to buy a battery for an el-cheapo watch I had than it would to just buy another $2.99 watch. Now this same problem is still with us and getting worse. Some batteries today can cost anywhere from $5.00 to over a hundred (if you include paying shipping and labor to have the manufacturer do the job).
It’s ridiculous. If I have a watch, laptop, camera, phone or whatever and it’s battery finally reaches the point at which it needs to be replaced, I don’t want to buy a new device and have to go through all the hassles of getting everything set the way I want it. I just want to put in a new battery and go on about my business.
I wouldn’t want to ship it somewhere or take it in to a dealer or repair shop. I just want to open a battery compartment, change batteries, close it up, charge it if necessary and I want to do all this for as little hard cash as possible.
