Nintendo’s new “Fan Network”

I just read about the new “Nintendo Fan Network” and I can’t help wondering what they’re thinking… This thing is supposed to be something to take to the game to make it easy to order goodies, watch tv coverage and access stats & information about the game.
Personally, I can’t really see the point of spending money on something like that. I could get the same thing by staying home, watching said game on tv or keeping track of stats on the internet. All that and more without having to deal with traffic, parking, crowds or anything else like that that detracts from such an outing.
