I saw somthing this morning about DirecTV getting into video games and I can’t help wondering why?

First off, the story looked like they were getting into some technology that allows them to make games available through their set-top boxes. Then you read it more closely and find out that what they’re actually going to do is provide coverage of people playing games and that it’s actually gotten started on July 9. What they didn’t do is say anything in the article about what channel it’s going to be on or air dates and times.

The cool part is that they’re including various “in-game cameras” that will allow viewers to get an inside look at the games as they’re being played.

Honestly, it’s about the only way I can think of that’s going to make televised video game matches very appealing at all. Who want’s to watch others play when you could play for yourself. That would be a novelty for a while, but would only appeal to hard core gamers who’re looking to pick up tricks & such from other players. by putting virtual cameras in the game, the viewing audience gets to see more than a couple of guys sitting in front of game consoles. But then again, if they don’t start letting people know when and on what channel to look for it, nobody’s going to watch. This entry sponsored by Tenuate
