Apparently people and organizations that have been expressing concern over privacy issues are finally starting to get some results. In this case, it’s Micro$oft and Yahoo changing their privacy policies to limit how long they retain data about users and their search habits.

The whole search engine thing is a mixed blessing. On the one hand you’ve got some really handy tools that make life a lot easier when it comes to finding stuff on the Internet. On the other, you have outfits doing everything they can to datamine their users so that they can shove targeted advertising down their throats. The more personal information, including search queries, that they can collect, the more advertising they can offer that is relevant to individual users.

Problem is that they’ve got to be restricted from too much of this datamining and data retention. Both in how much of what kind of data they can gather and how long they can keep it and what they can use it for.
