Dispite the fact that the operators of YouTube are doing everything they can to remove illegally shared material from their site, this group of Japanese media people actually said:

“YouTube has to stop how it runs its site and get rid of the illegal clips. We want them to reset the service,”

Obviously they have no idea what they’re asking. To simply “reset the service” as they ignorantly put it, would mean nuking EVERYTHING on YouTube and copyright or not, that just ain’t going to happen.

There’s a bit of a fine line here. Those who own the copyright on something have the right to control that thing’s distribution. On the other hand, they might stop and think a second about the publicity they’re getting. Both from making impossible demands like this one and from the popularity of the programs and clips being posted. I think in the long run they would be well advised to consider how they can benefit from embracing file sharing sites like YouTube.

Nuking the service? That would be terrible… I’m glad that there is little probability of this actually happening.
