We can all thank God that Endeavor landed safely today, the trip unaffected by either hurricane Dean or by the damage to the heat shield tiles.
I noticed in the news stories about it that they seemed to go out of their way to mention that the astronauts were 100% in agreement with NASA officials that decided against making in-flight repairs. I understand that all these folks seem to have a really high confidence in their hardware, but really, would it have been such a bad thing to go out and do a quick paintjob with the emittance wash just for a little extra insurance?
They had plenty of time and in fact taking that time and delaying the landing by one orbit would have had Hurricane Dean that much farther out of the way. Yeah, I know, it was a long way off but have you actually looked at the sattelite pics of that thing? It’s bigger than Texas fer crying out loud.
