Reviewer Thinks Iphone Tops

Welcome back!

I just ran across this review where the reviewer is definitely a true believer. Apparently he thinks that this thing is the model for what all phones should be... But I wonder about that...

Review: Rival Phones No Match for IPhone

By PETER SVENSSON

NEW YORK (AP) - The iPhone makes me mad. Not, mind you, at the iPhone itself, but mad at cell-phone manufacturers who have saddled us for years with interfaces that lure us into labyrinths of menus.

The buttons that are supposed to guide us through this maze do different things on every screen: a single button can mean "Back" on one screen, "Cancel" on another, "Exit" on a third.

The iPhone has one button on its face. It always does the same thing: takes you to the top menu, where icons representing all functions of the phone - music player, Internet browser and more - are laid out in a clear manner. Wham, you're out of the labyrinth.

...The reason is simple enough, call me old fashioned if you like, but I think that phones are getting TOO complicated and comprehensive. Whatever happened to a phone being just that.. a phone? And really..... I've seen the screens on them, why anyone in their right mind would want to browse the internet or handle email on one is absolutely beyond me. I get irritated just keying in a short text message, forget writing emails! and web browsing? on that tiny little screen? No thanks. I'll stick with my desktop pc with a 17 inch monitor.

The beauty of the iPhone is that it’s a handheld mac that you can make phonecalls on. Safari, Email, iCal, in the palm of your hand. It’s like the ultimate pda, that you can make phonecalls on.

I don’t use a cellphone at present, but the iPhone is a very cool gadget.

I guess it comes down to personal preferences. I personally would never want to use something that small for anything web related… I’ve grown too attached to my 17 inch monitor and the real keyboard
