Teen Unlocks Iphone From AT&T Network

Welcome back!

Do you want to know what one of the most read blogs is going to be this week? I'm betting that if George Hotz's "Finding JTAG on the iPhone" This is because he's posted step by step instructions for a combination of hardware and software hacks that, when completed, allow the iPhone to be used on other networks besides AT&T.

Teen 'Unlocks' iPhone From AT&T Network

NEW YORK (AP) - Armed with a soldering iron and a large supply of energy drinks, a slight, curly haired teenager has developed a way to make the iPhone, arguably the gadget of the year, available to a much wider audience.

George Hotz of Glen Rock, N.J., spent his last summer before college figuring out how to "unlock" the iPhone, freeing it from being restricted to a single carrier, AT&T Inc. (ATT)

The procedure, which the 17-year-old posted on his blog Thursday, raises the possibility of a cottage industry springing up to buy iPhones, unlocking them and then selling them to people who don't want AT&T service or can't get it, particularly overseas.

I never did understand why Apple had to build the thing so that it was tied exclusively to AT&T. Seems to me that if it was open to any network that they'd stand to sell a heck of a lot more of them. Of course, now they're probably going to... at least buyers who don't want or can't get AT&T service and either have the skills and patience or know someone who does will be buying the things and having their virtual chains cut, freeing them from AT&T
