Is Earth REALLY Screwed?

Welcome back!

Personally, I don't think so. At least not in the way that has apparently been suggested by Professor James Lovelock. Some may remember him as the guy who invented the "Gaia theory", which is a really newage-ish kinda theory that treats the planet like it was a living organism (I remember reading that this "theory" includes the idea that the organism that is Earth also possesses feelings, moods, and a somewhat capricious temper).

Anyway, this Lovelock has been quoted as saying that not only has the increase in greenhouse gasses put us on the road to Global Warming but that even if we were to suddenly reduce emissions drastically it wouldn't do us any good. In fact, the quote goes on to explain that it would actually make matters worse.

Frankly, none of this makes any sense to me at all. Either we've got global warming going on or not, if we do, then cutting down production of what brought it on would be the only logical solution. Then again, I've never seen anything even remotely resembling a convincing argument that explains global warming in a world that isn't showing me any evidence that anything is changing.

I was going to refer to where I saw the quotes by Lovelock that I mentioned, but then decided that because that source did not link to any source documents for those quotes, that I'd just explain that I've no way to substantiate them (short of an hour or two of research that I'm just plain not going to spend any time on).

I just had to write a bit about it though if only because of how ridiculous it sounded.
