Open Home Network?

I just saw an article by Bruce Schneier on wired.com talking about Wi-Fi security. He's advocating the idea of more people allowing their home LAN's to be open to anyone within Wi-Fi range that can connect to the system. His basic argument is that a spammer or somebody is a lot more likely to sit in a cafe someplace comfortable and use their connection than they are to sit outside his home in the cold pretending to search for something in their truck toolbox for hours while they launch a few million spam emails.
I have to agree that having more "open" Wi-Fi connection points, especially free ones, is a great idea I'm still just concerned enough to not jump right in and open my home LAN. Of course, Because I live in a rural area that's not very likely to be as much of a problem as it would in the city.
On the other hand, one of the ways that businesses can gain a bit of good will is to set up an open Wi-Fi network that customers and would-be customers can use.
As for me... I'm going to keep our home LAN closed, I'm not quite convinced that open Wi-Fi is that great of an idea for home users that may or may not have the know-how to make their machines secure regardless of who might be connected to their network.
