FCC Opening Proceeding Comcast blocking P2P

Welcome back!

This not only ought to be interesting, but it's kinda important as well. I just saw an article on Arstechnica talking about how the FCC has opened rule-making proceedings over the huge amount of noise created when Comcast got caught blocking p2p traffic by sending false signals to both ends of the p2p exchange making it look to each end that the other had aborted the transfer.

How this situation is handled will be a test of where we stand on net neutrality and the simple fact that while ISPs are allowed to use reasonable means to manage their networks, the customers are allowed to access any legal content and run whatever services they please. What Comcast and other ISPs don't want is to be forced to be up front about what they're dragging out of their IT tool storage to use for shaping traffic.

The only reasonable thought is that any "traffic shaping" needs to be applied across the board to all customers and not target any one application or class of applications.

The FCC is inviting comments on this rule-making proceeding. To make it easy for anyone to comment there is an Electronic Comment Filing System to submit comments. Reference WC Docket no. 07-52.

Don't waste time, the deadline for submitting comments is 2/13/08. Replies are due 2/28/08.
