Using Cell Phones To Detect Radiation

I suppose it had to happen sooner or later. Now that cell phones are practically everywhere somebody has come up with the idea of using a network of cell phones with radiation detectors to spot radiation. Since the things are practically everywhere it’d be possible to cover a huge amount of real estate.
Then it’s just a matter of when one detects radiation, it passes that information along with the location of the phone at the time according to it’s built in GPS system. Reports coming in from several phones could create an accurate map of radiation intensities which would allow a dirty bomb or other nuclear device to be spotted and tracked down quickly.
Then there’s the privacy aspect. This makes clear once again that if you have a GPS equipped phone it’s location is an easy matter to track. Add to this the fact that it’s possible to send a signal to a phone that turns its microphone on without the user being aware of it and you’ve got a nasty potential.
In the end, if you want privacy and you have a cell phone, take the battery out of it.
