I just read something on a website that I found by following a link from slashdot that I cannot for the life of me understand why it’s not headline news all over the place. Researchers have discovered a gene that blocks the spread of HIV.

It’s really simple sounding, when this gene is put into a cell, it prevents the virus from being assembled. This also means that the virus cannot get out of the cell and therefore cannot spread.

Granted, they’re still working on the thing, and they’ve got to work out how to turn this thing on in people with HIV but still, even though it’s still early work, it’s newsworthy. One of the reasons that I don’t get why it hasn’t gotten more press is the fact that doing so could get them more funding and help speed their research along.
