Japan wants to Govern Top News Web Sites?

Welcome back!

That's right. According to a recent article on slashdot,

A Japanese government panel is proposing to govern influential, widely read news-related sites as newspapers and broadcasting are now regulated.

Any time a government starts getting into the business of controlling news in any form, you're headed down a road to an unpleasant vacation spot... A place where it gets harder by the day to find out any real information about significant or important news.

Government control of the news may easily start with the best of (stated) intentions, but exactly what is meant by "illegal and harmful content"? That's pretty vague ... and subject to change at the whim of whatever forces are controlling the government at the time. It could easily, very easily, be turned into a weapon of dis-information that is used to keep the citizenry in line while the government runs amok doing whatever it pleases.

Shades of 1984. No thanks.

Anytime a government tries to pull something like this, the people that government is supposed to represent need to rise up and let 'em know that it won't be tolerated.
