In Spite of Vista’s Failure, Microsoft Still Plans To Abandon XP

Ok, it’s true that Microsoft has given in and decided to extend the lifetime of XP on “low end laptops” until 6/30/2010 or one year after the next version of Windows, Code named “Windows 7″, is released.
It’s also true that XP is still consistently outperforming Vista in benchmark tests. What Microsoft needs to realize is that people don’t use the same standards when choosing an OS as they do when shopping for bedding sets. When you’re looking for bedding you want something that fits your needs, and bigger is often better. Speed isn’t an issue and it doesn’t have to be compatible with a lot more than just the person who’s going to be using it. The Operating system on the other hand, needs to be compatible with as much hardware as possible and adaptable for as many applications as possible. If it isn’t, sooner or later it’s going to end up on the trash heap.
Another factor is there are a LOT of people who have tried Vista and ended up wishing they hadn’t. Vista typically requires more memory, is slower and lacks device drivers for a lot of hardware. Not only that, but Microsoft, in their infinite blindness, has decided to make it difficult if not impossible for service pack upgrades to Vista to work if there are drivers in use that Microsoft hasn’t declared compatible… regardless of whether they work or not.
