New Scientist has an article up about an idea that’s come out of Mitsubishi that proposes the concept that motion sensors would be less invasive than CCTV cameras everywhere. I’ll admit that it is a little better than having CCTV cameras watching everything but these people are ready to fill a whole line of alcohol rehabs if they think that this makes constant tracking of people ok.

There’s still the one thing that I guess they don’t get. This constant tracking of everything everyone does is a violation of the basic human right to privacy. I will say that in high security situations things like motion sensors, CCTV, and other means to track the movements of everyone in the area is not only reasonable, it’s a good idea.

The problem with it is that sooner or later some alleged person is going to decide it’d be really neat if those motion sensors were set up everywhere so that everybody could always be tracked all the time. It’d really be nice if these bright individuals would consider the potential of something and it’s potential evil uses before they just blat the thing out there.

Of course that’s the problem. Too few people actually think anymore these days.
