TV Buyers Beware Of Unlabeled Analog-Only Sets

Best Buy, Circuit City, Target, Sears, Kmart, and Wal-Mart have all been hit with fines totaling $6.6Million dollars for failing to put notices near analog-only sets warning customers that the sets have analog only tuners and will require converter boxes to receive broadcast signals after February 19, 2009.
I realize that retailers and manufacturers have a load of analog sets that they need to get rid of but this is not the way to win friends and influence people. Frankly, in the wine club of business, this makes them a cheap, watered down near-beer.
The big problem however is that the manufacturers knew well in advance that this date was coming. The thing for them to have done was phase out all manufacturing of sets with analog tuners at least a year ago. That way they wouldn’t now still have tons of the things that will turn into boat anchors on 2/19/09 unless somebody choses to fork over extra cash for a converter box.
Personally, I’d rather just have the digital equipment. A converter box is just another bit of hardware in the line. Another thing that can go wrong, or make a signal to weak to record properly…etc. etc.
