Why Apple Anything?

Here’s a question that I’m sure is going to get under the skins of some… Why bother with Anything made by Apple?

Once upon a time there was a young genius by the name of Steve Wozniak who built the first Apple Computers in his garage. He had a partner by the name o Steve Jobs. The Apple ][e series 6502 based 8bit computers in that line were legendary. They had speed, power and capabilities over the crowd. They did stuff in 1983 that the 8080 based systems that were then termed "IBM PC & Compatibles" weren't seen doing for years later.

The reason for this was the hobbyist nature and natural born hacker (in the ORIGINAL sense of the word!) types that pushed the thing to the limits of what everybody thought it could do and made it do even more.

Then Jobs took over, essentially stealing the company from Wozniak. The ][e line died, the ][gs line died out as well. leaving them with the Macintosh, which to my memory was regarded as one of the buggiest bits of flotsam ever to hit a computer store, second only to modern day Windoze Veeesta machines.

Not only that, but you couldn't just walk into a computer shop and buy software for it. You had to order it from a relatively small set of software publishers and most of the stuff available tended toward a certain function set.

Today the Mac has come a long way. It's got a lot more software options but you still can't walk into walmart and buy your favorite game in a Mac version. Then comes this thing called "Leopard", which is the latest incarnation of the operating system. I don't think I have EVER seen one single good word about it. From what I can tell, Leopard is to Apple what Veeesta is to windoze.... a disaster.

Everything is nice and neatly colored white, so people buy it…. best explanation i can think of.

I guess it’s as good an explanation as any, but then I don’t understand why Linux doesn’t gain popularity faster… being free and all…

I use to work in the design industry and classically we considered Macs to be a good cheap platform for our design software.

Graphics and graphic oriented design software does seem to be the main niche of Mac’s.

Personally, I prefer something that’s more well rounded… and that you can get software for easily. Though as veeesta progresses and Microbrain finally kills off XP, I’ll probably keep a windoze box (or maybe just a virtual machine) for games and move all my working functions to Linux.

I’ve been a fan of Apple since long time ago, primarily because Steve’s figure, but I have never bought any Apple’s product until iPod hit the market.
Even I have visited Apple’s store a couple of times, I haven’t bought one of its computer products, don’t know when will that be.

But which Steve? Wozniak the creative or Jobs who ended up pretty much owning the dream created by the Woz?

So far, I’ve never bought anything Apple myself. Right now the only thing I would even consider would be an Apple ][e with a full set of peripherals & memory expansion just because it's part of my history in learning computers.

That, and the fact that I've still got a box of 5.25inch disks with Apple ][e software on them. They're only about 25 years old, they should still work... right? ;-)

Friends of mine swear by apple computers. I wouldn’t by one not enough of the programs i use are compatable and why buy something that you have to install virtual windows on to use them.

That’s one of my main problems with Apple computers. I really don’t want to have to run an emulator to use my stuff

I recently switched to Leopard after about 15 years of using a Windows machine. It is an incredible operating system. I don’t think I could ever go back. I’ve never heard anyone who uses Leopard complain about it. Leopard is far superior to Windows XP.

I recall seeing some complaints about Leopard but I can’t for the life of me remember what they were. That you’re satisfied with it is the main thing… if it works that’s what matters.

The last Apple machine I actually sat down and used was an Apple ][e back in 1983. I’d love to have one now for nostalgia if nothing else
