Rented Routers

I don’t know why this hasn’t occurred to me until now but because of the way our DSL service is arranged, we’re using a wireless router that’s supplied by the ISP for so much a month. It’s not a lot but it IS rented and if there ever comes a time when there’s a move or other reason to change ISP’s then that router, complete with all of the custom port forwarding settings that I’ve put in place over the last year or so.

The solution is simple enough in theory but quite another matter in practice. The theory is that someday we go shopping for a wireless router on the cheap, maybe a used cisco unit or something. Then I write down (who am I kidding, I’m not writing anything on paper if I don’t have to! I’ll type up the details in a text file) all of the port forwarding settings, change the router and then spend an hour or so making sure that all of the settings and such are right on the new, non-rented unit. Then the old one gets put back in it’s box and returned to the ISP.

Moral of the story is don’t rent network equipment if you can do it ANY other way.
