Ever since the “format wars” between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray ended a while back with Blu-Ray coming out on top, lots of people have been pretty much assuming that it’s now safe to go ahead and start buying Blu-Ray equipment and titles without having to worry about some other format coming along and threatening the Blu-Ray dominance. Well, it’s looking like Blu-Ray’s trip to world dominance is being stopped at the travel guide stage.
Toshiba is coming out with a new High Def Disc Format that will offer high definition video quality that’s comparable to Blu-ray and HD-DVD. However this new brainchild of theirs has two extra selling points that a LOT of people are going to like.
The first one is that it’s “Backwards Compatible” with standard DVD formats. This means that not only will it be able to play it’s High Definition discs, it will also be able to play standard DVDs that are already out there. Something that niether HD-DVD NOR Blu-Ray has ever offered.
The second feature is going to be a serious draw, it’s going to be selling for a lower price than Blu-Ray units. I think that this, along with backwards compatibility, is going to make this format a threat that the folks at Sony will blow off at first and then later wish they’d taken it seriously.
