I recently wrote about the FileZilla FTP Server and Client programs but there was a version of it that I hadn’t mentioned. The FileZilla Client program, which is the version that most people will need, is also available in a portable apps version.

Even though I’d spent time browsing the programs available on portableapps.com, I hadn’t paid attention to FileZilla because I’ve been using the standard version for so long. In fact, I hadn’t even updated it since version 2.2.16.

All that changed the other day when I had a computer lockup that forced me to do a “power off reboot”. When it restarted, Windows needed to scandisk drive C. When that was done it had eaten parts of my browser profile and my FileZilla settings.

The browser profile I was able to restore from a backup, it was a little over a week old and I still lost about 30 bookmarks, but no catastrophic loss there. FileZilla on the other hand, was completely hosed. The program worked ok but all of the settings for over 35 FTP accounts were gone completely.

It was around this time that it finally occurred to me to check for a PortableApps.com version of it. Sure enough, there is one. I got it and proceeded to spend a few hours re-creating all those FTP accounts, changing their passwords and setting up FileZilla with them. Once that was done I immediately backed it up. I’m NOT going to suffer that kind of loss again.

The moral of this story is to make backups at least once in a while. Besides, having things like Thunderbird, Firefox, FileZilla, and others on a flash drive (and kept up to date) means that I can take these things with me and be able to get a lot done even if I’m on the go as long as I can get access to a computer to plug the flash drive into.
