25 Ways To Get Fired

There’s a post up on TechCult listing what it’s calling “The 25 Best High-Tech Pranks“. While I have to admit that there’s several things on that list that sound like cool ways to out-prank the office clown or nail the guy that’s always annoying the snot out of you. I also have to say that a lot of those “pranks” are the kind of thing that will get you fired in a hurry.
Seriously, we’re not just talking about mild stuff like taking wheels off of the office furniture or putting salt in the sugar dispenser by the coffee machine. Some of these can cause some real problems.
For example, the very first one involves changing a commonly used shortcut on the victim’s desktop so that the target points to:
“%windir%\system32\shutdown.exe -r -t 00″,
which will cause their computer to reboot every time they try to use that shortcut. Do this to the wrong person who has important files open and you’d better HOPE and pray they never find out it was you because you’ll be on the unemployment line before they get it fixed.
Number 18, called “Remote Control”, involves setting up a VNC (virtual network computing) server on the victim’s computer and then using the VNC client on your computer to control theirs. Yeah, it’s got potential for some real fun but let the IT department find out about it and the Sysadmin will have your hindquarters for breakfast…. Not only that, but with hacking paranoia the way it is now, you could find yourself up on charges for any number of computer crimes
