invitationconsultants.com isn’t quite the ordinary e-store and I’m not talking about their product line. Yeah, they do the usually expected custom invitations for all kinds of occasions such as Anniversary, Bar & Bat Mitzvah, Birthday Parties, Engagements, Graduation, Wedding and Quinceanera invitations. The real difference I noticed in their site was in the site’s visual design and the CSS driven top menu bar.

The main body of the site is laid out so that the center of the page is devoted to easy to find links to pages devoted to most popular occasions. The whole thing is easy to navigate, quick loading and filled with plenty of pictures of their products, both thumbnail and larger shots.

The one thing about the design that caught my attention right away though was the way they’ve got their menu coded. The menu bar is in dark brown with white text, however when you mouseover one part of it the colors invert and the submenu expands from it in two directions at once.

I couldn’t resist the urge to use “view source” and confirm my suspicion. The trick behind the menu design is done with some really cool CSS coding. Yes It does also uses some javascript to slow down the transitions for a dramatic fluid effect but the cool part of it is that even with javascript disabled the menu and most of it’s effect still works.

That part of the site is a great testimony to the kind of thing that can be accomplished by a determined CSS programmer.
