FireFox 3: Not Quite Ready For Prime Time

Well, Firefox 3 is officially released and they’ve managed to achieve a record breaking 8 million plus downloads on the first day. I’ve loaded up the Portable Apps version of Firefox 3 to give it a test drive and I have to say that by and large it’s got a lot going for it.
It’s obvious that it has better memory management because it’s not only using less memory, but is apparently doing a better job of letting go of memory that it’s no longer using.
The one thing I didn’t care for was when it came to loading up my bookmarks. Now it’s possible that the problem came from the fact that I use a portable version of firefox and just made a copy of my main profile to use for testing FF3, I don’t know yet. But while most of the bookmarks made it just fine, the “personal toolbar folder” in the bookmarks had to be imported special. It wasn’t a major problem for me because I’ve used the bookmark manager before and only took a few minutes to figure it out. It would have been better if that problem hadn’t happened.
A show stopper for me however was the fact that of the Firefox plugins that I use, several of them do not have Firefox 3 compatible versions available yet. Until that happens, I’m staying with Firefox 2 for my main browsing needs.

Saying that firefox 3 isn’t ready for prime time just because the extensions you use arnt compatible is stupid.
on that note: most extensions will work just fine if you install the “nightly tester tools” extension and override the compatibility check.
It’s not stupid in the least.
My definition of “ready for prime time” includes that the program will work ‘out of the box’ with most standard plugins.
The “nightly tester tools” extension is all fine and dandy, but the fact that it has to override a compatibility check means that things are broken and don’t quite work right yet.
It means that the plugins need to be upgraded to Firefox 3 compatibility standards. Until that happens, FF3 is “Not Ready For Prime Time” according to my definition of it.
