Human Multitasking A Myth?

I just saw an article that’s saying essentially that the practice of multitasking isn’t really saving people as much time as they think it is.

My thought is that there *might* be some reality to this, but then again at the same time, a certain level of multitasking by people actually does increase productivity. The trick is in choosing what tasks to combine. Driving a car and having a fight would qualify as a bad example of multitasking. Then again, browsing a yard sale and talking on the ever-present cell phone could work out fine. You have a shot at finding something on the cheap and you don’t have to miss the phone call.

How many people combine lunch with getting this or that task finished? I think that sometimes people overuse the term “multitasking” when talking about human activities. When you say that you’re multitasking it implies that you are performing two or more tasks at the same time. While computers do a very good job of executing more than one task at a time, people are another matter entirely. Managing more than one task at a time can be a real challenge. Especially if you’re talking about physical tasks as opposed to management type tasks.
