Microsoft Talking Possible Online Divisions Merger With AOL

Here’s a scary thought… AOL, the onetime evil monster of the old dialup world is reportedly talking with Microsoft about the two giants merging their online divisions. I have to say that I’ve got more than a few doubts about whether or not the Internet needs this particular piece of handcrafted jewelry hanging about it’s virtual neck anymore than it needs a millstone for a pendant.
It’s simple, anytime you take two large companies and let ‘em combine forces it may be good for one or both of them but it’s generally “shaft time” for the average consumer. Prices go up, products and services change (almost always ruining the best ones in some manner) and oh, don’t forget the jobs that will no doubt get the axe due to “restructuring” and so on.
I’m pretty sure that anybody that’s ever been stuck with AOL and their legendary nightmare of a service… especially anyone that’s ever tried to get shut of their service only to have them continue billing for six months would very likely agree. As for Micro$oft, I think that goes without saying.
