I’ve spent a fair amount of time searching around to find a useful program to record video screen captures and save them to an .AVI movie that I can edit or use in something else. Along the way I’ve found, downloaded and tried a bunch of utilities that promise to do what I want.
Unfortunately, it’s almost inevitable that there is either a limitation on functionality or it’s some kind of “time bomb ware” that will only work for so many days or a certain number of executions before it stops and insists that you pay for a full version.
Then I found CamStudio. I does everything I’ve ever wanted a video screen capture program to do. It can capture full screen or a preset size. The cursor can be highlighted or left invisible to the viewer. It can also pick up sound so that you can narrate what you’re doing on screen. The resulting movie can be saved in .AVI format or as .SWF. This makes it great for building demo and how-to movies. Best of all, it’s freeware.
Another thing I noticed about CamStudio, several of the “I’ll work x times or for y days and then nag you to buy the ‘pro’ version” style of screen capture programs bear a suspicious resemblance to CamStudio. Enough so that I wonder if the CamStudio code is being ripped off.
