If somebody had told me about it I don’t know if I would have believed them very easily. I admit that I don’t know a whole lot about insurance but I do know that it’s a huge, monstrously big business so the idea of a non profit HMO was something of a surprise to me.

Then I saw the website for Kaiser Permanente California and there it is, big as life. I guess what makes it different is that there’s no shareholders that are clamoring for dividends and profits, which allows Kaiser Permanente to focus on the needs of it’s members.

Don’t let the “non profit” part fool you though, they’ve got this monstrous network of over tweleve thousand doctors, thirty medical centers and 400 medical offices… That’s a lot of resources to work with. They’re also not just limited to California, there are also a couple of sister sites, Kaiser Permanente Colorado and Kaiser Permanente Georgia, which extends their reach considerably.

At all three sites, they offer several different types of health coverage for individuals and families as well as for businesses and groups. Even groups as small as a husband and wife self-employed team can enroll in the business and group plans.

The sites all offer free quotes online to give you an idea of the coverage plans available and to help you choose the plan that fits you best.

Non-profit medical insurance companies are fairly common in the UK as historically many of them came from old charities set up around specific hospitals to help working class families pay for doctors in the 19th century.

I would suspect if you did some research on large U.S. health insurance providers you’d probably find some similarities.

It’s possible that modern health insurance companies may have started as you say, however I have to say that I think that 99.99% of them are in it exclusively for the money. They could give a rip about the patients OR the doctors.
