I’ve been watching rockets being launched from Kennedy Space Center since the early days of project Apollo. I watched every bit of the Apollo 13 coverage that I could (after school anyway). I watched Apollo-Soyuz test mission and the skylab launch and the live coverage of it’s subsequent trouble laden deployment.

I saw the coverage as the first space shuttle, The Enterprise, was rolled out for the first time with the Star Trek theme playing in the background and certain infamous actors were present. (BTW- I still think that name should have been reserved for a working ship!)

Later I watched as the working shuttles began regular flights, including some spectacular night launches. I wasn’t watching live but saw all of the coverage when the Challenger was destroyed. Years later I watched live coverage, knowing that the men and women aboard Columbia were already dead by the time television cameras could see it’s contrail across the sky. Then, after a long hiatus to find the cause of that disaster and work to prevent it from repeating itself I eagerly watched as the shuttle program resumed.

All of this watching has been of television coverage, a lot of it live, and a lot was tape delayed snippets that showed up on news programs. However I’ve never had the chance that an Air Canada passenger had recently. He managed to get some really great video of a space shuttle launch through the cabin window of the plane in flight.
