There’s actually a small but growing group of people, amateur scientists, that are working on building fusion reactors. Quite a few of them have actually built working fusion reactors in their basements and attic labs. Imagine trying to tell the New York movers that not only do they need to hump all of your furniture to the truck, they’ve also got to shlep that fusion lab to it’s new home too.

Of course, while these reactors do produce fusion reactions, they are so far consuming more power than they could produce. The facinating part of it is that it’s not something that is regulated. It turns out that you’ve got a better shot of getting elecrtocuted than you do of taking a noticeable does of radiation.

Even that electrocution risk isn’t the monster risk you would think since the equipment, while using high voltages, is drawing a low amperage current.

It’s interesting that amateur scientists are doing things like this. It kinda makes me think of the early days of radio and television where most of the work was done by amateur experimenters trying to advance a new technology. Just as they are largely responsible for some of the early advances in electronics, radio and television, These modern amateurs could one day be called the pioneers of cheap, efficient modern fusion.
