FTC Rule Change Will Reduce Prerecorded Telemarketing Messages

You know how it is, you sit down to dinner and get started when the phone rings. It’s not even Uncle Bubba talking about his new job making tv stands, It’s a telemarketer. Worse than that, it’s a prerecorded message with somebody reading a telemarketing script.
Well, the FTC has *finally* gotten around to doing something about it. They have changed thier “Telemarketing Sales Rule”. As of Sept 2009 Telemarketing calls that deliver a prerecorded message will be prohibited unless the consumer has agreed to accept this kind of call from a particular caller/seller (yeah, right, that’s gonna happen.).
Until the rule takes effect, telemarketers must give you a quick, obvious and easy way to opt-out of any call and the opt-out system has to be in place by Dec. 01, 2009.
Phone Spam = Pham
This sort of thing is what I call “phone spam”. (hrm.. maybe we can make that into a new term… contract them together and call it “Pham”. ) From my point of view, the perfect opt-out of any call is to hang up as soon as I discover it’s pham. Of course, a means to opt-out of phammers *before* they interrupt my favorite reruns of Stargate-SG1 would also be welcome but I’m not going to hold my breath waiting for a working system to be developed and implemented. I remember the “can spam” act and the “do not call list”, two good examples of how this sort of thing may be a good idea but doesn’t actually work.
