I have always preferred the old-fashioned brick and mortar kind of shopping when it comes to buying things like computers, phones and so on, you know, the usual assortment of home and personal or business electronics that we’ve all come to depend on so much.

Oh, I’ve been known to buy computer stuff online and I’ve even gotten my money’s worth more than once, but I still prefer doing things in person. I want to turn something on, run it through it’s paces and see for myself that it works. Of course, for every rule there’s an exception.

In this case it was a local store that dealt in at&t cell phones (or was it alltel? I don’t remember right now). I should have known right away that something wasn’t right when the guy had one of those bluetooth headset things in his ear and he’d be in the middle of a conversation and suddenly he’d start talking to the air without so much as an excuse me.

Anyway, cutting to the chase we ended up with a phone from them, took it home and the blasted thing didn’t get a signal at home and only had spotty service at best in the surrounding area. We took advantage of the bit about their plan that said we could return the thing within 14 days and not be out anything but the cost of air time used. We’d used a whole two minutes finding out it wasn’t good enough.

In the end, the whole deal was a complete mess. I wish then that I’d known about sites like bestincellphones.com. For one thing, they’re not tied just to any one phone company. Instead they’re offering cell phones and wireless plans for a wide variety such as T-Mobile phones.

Of course, when getting a phone online one of the first things that you need to be aware of is does the company have service available where you are. By doing some research online you can find out whether or not Sprint phones will work in your area, and if they don’t you save yourself the trouble of getting one.

Rural areas like ours are really bad about that. One thing I don’t expect I’m going to see anytime soon is the “can you hear me now?” guy from Verizon Wireless phones walking around our tiny burg because he wouldn’t be getting an answer, there’s no Verizon anything in this neck of the woods.
