Concerned about “Identity theft”? Maybe you should be if you’ve got one of those new credit cards that has an RFID chip in it. If so, here’s a video you should watch.
There’s been lots of people over the last few years that have had a lot to say about how easily snooped these things are but most people have pretty much ignored them because the things are so convenient and heaven knows that making something easy is MUCH more important than being secure or safe.
I just ran across an episode of Boing Boing Tv that I think everybody with a credit card should watch because it SHOWS just how easy it is to read one of those things for very little cost using a cheap reader that can be found on ebay for as little as $8.
Granted that this demo requires getting pretty close to the card, it’s only a matter of time before somebody figures out how to make the reader sensitive enough to read credit cards from far enough away to not be noticed.
After watching this I strongly suggest that if you DO have an RFID credit card it would be a great idea to wrap it in Aluminum foil or even one of those stainless steel wallets shown in the video.
