A tech company called Verayo has announced a new flavor of RFID chip, one that they say cannot be cloned. It uses a Challenge / Response technology called “Physical Unclonable Functions (PUF)”.

Personally, I think perhaps that if they really believe that the thing cannot be cloned then perhaps their exec’s ought to take some progesterone and calm down and actually think before they go making claims.

Years ago the MD-4 cryptographic hash function was considered by many to be un-breakable. The same was said about MD-5 and later SHA-1. MD-4 has long since fallen as well as MD-5. Now in the last couple of years there’s been some strong advances against SHA-1 that it’s not really considered all that secure for critical uses anymore. The moral of all this is that nothing is un-breakable or in the case of RFID chips, uncloneable.

Meanwhile, Verayo CEO Anant Agrawal will be speaking at the RFID World conference in Las Vegas, delivering the Industry Address September 10. In addition to “PUF” technology, it’s an ISO 14443-A compatible chip with a 64-bit unique tag ID and 512-bit one-time programmable memory.
