US-DOJ Investigating Possible Antitrust Suit Against Google
Welcome back!
Word is out on Slashdot that the US Department of Justice has hired Sanford Litvack, formerly of Disney to get out his legal swimwear and get ready for a possible anti-trust suit against Google.
They're giving a close look to a deal between Google and Yahoo that accounts for 80% of the advertising in online searches. According to the Wall St Journal, Litvack's hiring is apparently a signal that they're extremely serious about this possible suit. Litvack didn't just drop out of nowhere either, under president Jimmy Carter. he was the Justice Department antitrust chief.
What's the deal between Google and Yahoo? The Wall St. Journal summed it up nicely:
The agreement with Yahoo, announced in June, gives Google, of Mountain View, Calif., the right to sell search and text ads on Yahoo sites, sharing revenue with Yahoo
With a move like that, Google is moving into position to become the biggest and eventually the only provider of online search advertising ... unless of course they're stopped.
