How To Disable Autorun On CD-ROMs

One of the things that’s bugged me for a long time is the fact that Windows operating systems have this thing to them about autoplaying any CD-ROM that’s inserted.
The problem with this is that there’s been plenty of cases where data cd’s allowed to autostart when inserted not only ran the program they were supposed to but would also be able to run something that would install some bit of malware that would eventually call home and download some more.
Fortunately it is easier to change this than it is to get life insurance rates from some companies without a physical.
Click the Start button, then click Run and enter GPEDIT.MSC
When that opens, click Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, System.
In the right pane find the entry called “Turn off autoplay”, double click it and and select “enable”
Click “Ok” and you’re done.
Note: this applies to Data & Program CD’s, Music CD’s will still autoplay unless that’s been turned off.
Another way that also gives you access to lots of otherwise hidden windows settings is to use Microsoft’s PowerToys Utility to customize you settings for autoplay for Data and Music CD’s
