In a recent entry, “Where Is IPV6?“, I wondered about the fact that with all the noise about IPV4 address space running out it struck me as a little disturbing that the continent of Africa was making the transition to IPV6 a heck of a lot faster than the rest of the world.

One comment was that because of NAT and the fact that ipv4 and ipv6 can coexist that the perceived urgency isn’t really as big as it looks. I’ll grant that the need for ipv6 isn’t nearly as urgent as some people would portray it in the media. Nor is ipv6 some kind of miracle magnetic bracelet that will cure all the ills of the Internet in a moment.

However, laying aside the sensationalistic aspects for a moment, there remains the fact that there seems to be very little movement by isp’s to implement ipv6 at all. According to a tech support chat thing (admittedly not an authoritative source) with some person or program at my own isp, centurytel, “There are no plans implemented for TCP/IP ver6 at this time.”

Now I’m becoming more curious. I wonder what ISP’s have done something with ipv6? When will isp’s that service rural areas like mine get around to doing something with it? Is there some form of public ipv4 to ipv6 proxy for users in v4 isp’s to connect to v6 addresses?
