Google’s Obfuscated TCP

People interested in online privacy will be interested to know that there’s a project over on Google Code developing “Obfuscated TCP”. There’s also a YouTube Video, Obfuscated TCP Introduction, that gives an overview of the project.
Before you move the computer to the tv room and get comfy in your home theater seating, be warned, that the “video” isn’t all that to look at. For the most part, it’s a black background with an oscilloscope style line going though the middle of the picture, varying with the narrator’s voice. In a way it’s reminiscent of a “Heroes” episode because the narrator’s voice sounds somewhat like that of the Mohinder Suresh character.
There *is* a bit more to the video than that, but it isn’t exactly engrossing either. As for the obfuscated TCP scheme itself, I think it has some promise in that would increase the use of encryption in everyday web use and it could increase security somewhat. I’m not 100% sure about it and will no doubt have to “watch” that vid again and look over some of the design documentation.
Obfuscated TCP is also not going to replace SSL, nor will it be proof against a determined attacker. The one advantage is that it would make casual snooping a LOT harder to accomplish.
