Inteldaily reports that the Dept of Homeland Security is going ahead with the first stage of their satellite based surveillance program.
This is in spite of the fact that there are still a lot of un-answered questions about how they're going to comply with privacy laws and what this is going to do to fourth amendment rights. It's very possible that use of this kind of surveillance will be in violation of forth amendment protections if used beyond a certain magnification.
The systems on these satellites are truely amazing in their capability. They're bringing an almost science fiction like capability online. This thing can not only focus on a target to within about ONE yard, it can probably read the digital signage in a storefront reflected off the glass of passing cars.
The problem is that once again, more surveillance is being put into motion while Joe and Jane Average citizen are mostly unaware of it because they're busy with other things and this stuff NEVER seems to spend a lot of time in mainstream media. Hardly ever will you see Charlie Gibson talking about it on the evening news.
This kind of thing is going to lead us to that Big Brother society that durned few have actually had the forsight to see coming for decades. Governments and big business will love it, Joe and Jane Average will quickly come to hate it. The problem is that by allowing stuff like this to get slipped in under the radar so to speak, by the time most people know about it, it'll be too late.
